Tips for Long Haul Flights

Whether you’re headed to Sicily or somewhere else international, here are some things to consider as you prepare for the international flight.

An 8 or 10 hour flight is a bit rough no matter how you slice it, but if you come to the airport prepared, you can minimize the discomfort. Here are some tips for traveling on a long haul flight:

  • Dress comfortably- it’s not the time to show off your new shoes or new outfit. Wear comfortable clothes (layers are important for the inevitable temperature swings on the airplane) and good walking shoes. Pack a second pair of comfy clothes in your carry-on so you can change after your long haul flight or when you arrive to your destination.

  • Pack toiletries that you would want to access for an overnight trip in your carry on so you can brush your teeth, change your contacts, take your medicines, etc. Include ear plugs and an eye mask so you can try to get some sleep.

  • Select your seat based on your own behavior- if you can sleep on airplanes, window seats are best because you can rest your head against the window (don’t forget a travel pillow!). If you frequent the restroom often, choose an aisle seat so you don’t have to climb over others. Upgrades in the economy section are worth it because for relatively little, you get more leg room and can choose your seat.

  • Stay hydrated- yes, alcoholic beverages are free on international flights but now is probably not the time to overindulge. Make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the flight so you don’t get dehydrated.

  • Force yourself to be on the new time zone when the flight begins. If you’re able to adjust mentally and physically to the new time, your jet lag will likely be less. If it’s night time at your destination when you take off, consider trying to sleep right away or right after your meal. Hold off on watching the movies until it’s day time at your destination.

  • For families traveling with children- many airlines offer a child friendly meal option but you have to select it prior to checking in for your flight. You can find this option if you go into your reservation on the airline’s website and select additional options. If anyone in your group has special meal needs, there are other options to choose such as vegetarian, gluten free, food allergies, and low sodium.
