Stereotypes and Truths about Sicilian People

Stereotype #1- Sicilians are associated with the mafia.

Although a few elements of the Godfather movies hold small truths and the mafia does still exist today in Sicily, they do not have the same power in the local community. Most Sicilians know someone in the mafia but do not like to discuss it so it’s best not to ask.

Stereotype #2- Sicilians are generous and hospitable.

It’s hard to find another place on this earth where the people extend generosity and hospitality the way Sicilians do. They cannot do enough for you. Sicilians take great joy in seeing you enjoy yourself in their region.

Stereotype #3- Sicilians don’t speak English.

You’ll find a few locals who can speak to you in English but Sicilians will go out of their way to communicate with you in other ways (using body language). They are always ready to help and will find a way to help you understand.

Stereotype #4- Sicilians are poor and uneducated.

Not all Sicilians are poor or uneducated but the opportunities on the island are less than the mainland and other parts of Europe. Many young people, who can afford to, will travel to the north to further their education and never return. Although they may lack education, opportunity, and extra money, Sicilians enjoy life and family better than most.

Stereotype #5- Sicilians are extremely family oriented.

Many Sicilian homes include multiple generations (grandparents, parents, and children) living together. Family is a very important aspect of Sicilian life and they have a strong loyalty to the family. Their sense of closeness and togetherness means that they typically know their 3rd and 4th cousins. Everyone is a cousin and when you go on a Sicilian Encounter, you become family too.
